Getting to Santa Cruz
UCSC is located on the ocean side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Two major airports are close-by on the San Francisco peninsula. The San Jose International Airport (SJC) is the closest airport. It is about 30 miles (45-60 minutes) from UCSC, depending on traffic conditions, and is served by most domestic and regional airlines, with limited service to Mexico and Canada. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about 70 miles north of UCSC. It is the primary international airport of the region and is served by all major airlines. It is recommended that international travelers (for example, from Europe, Asia and Australia) fly direct to San Francisco then travel by road to UCSC (allow 1.5-2 hours).
Group Airport Shuttles
We are organizing group shuttles to pick meeting participants up from the airports at peak arrival times on Sat Aug 8, and deliver them back to the airports at peak departure times on Tues Aug 11 and Wed Aug 12. The cost will be $50 round trip from SJC, or $75 round trip from SFO.
To reserve a spot on the group shuttle, please fill out the following form.
For other questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
NOTE ALL GROUP SHUTTLE RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE IN ADVANCE.
** Please be aware that SJC is closer to Santa Cruz than SFO. **
Other Transport Options
If you don’t join a group shuttle, below are some other options for you to book your own rides:
1) Early Bird Shuttle (831-462-3933) will meet your flight and drive you to your destination. Their fee from SJC to UCSC is $90 for 1-3 people 1-way (not including gratuity). Their fee from SFO to UCSC is $130 for 1-3 people 1-way (not including gratuity). Those numbers mean that 3 people can share a $90 or $130 ride. Additional charges apply for larger parties and there is an international arrival fee of $15. For a more complete list of Airport shuttle services, please visit: https://taps.ucsc.edu/getting-off-campus/airport-shuttles.html
2) Rent a car. Parking permits are included in the room & board fee of registrants. Commuters pay $9/day. Participants driving to the meeting will likely take Highway 17 from the north or HIghway 1 from the south. When entering Santa Cruz, head north/west on Highway 1 toward Half Moon Bay. Highway 1 becomes Mission Ave. Turn right at Bay St. and proceed to the campus entrance at Bay and High.

Parking on the UCSC campus is regulated 24-hours, 7 days a week and all vehicles parked on the campus are required to have a parking permit. On-campus residents will receive a parking permit as part of their room and board package. Commuters may purchase a parking permit at check-in.
Climate and Clothing
In August, the weather in Santa Cruz can vary tremendously. While the days can be quite warm (70-90° F, 21-32° C), early mornings and evenings can be cool (50-65° F, 10-18° C) and foggy. We strongly recommend bringing a light jacket or heavy sweater and dressing in layers. The natural setting of the campus includes both flat and hilly areas, and we suggest packing a pair of walking shoes. Housing and some meeting rooms are not air conditioned.
Computer Access and Telephone
UCSC will provide a guest log-in and password for wireless access at check-in. Each apartment has an ethernet and phone connection in the bedroom and you may request an instrument, at check in, if needed. Please visit http://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/ prior to arrival for computer configuration information if you will need to use Ethernet, and bring your own ethernet cable. There are no active phone lines in rooms. The McHenry Library, located in the center of campus, also offers free internet access on a limited basis. Our on-campus office at Stevenson College has free computer access for email.
Foreign participants are strongly encouraged to take out a traveler’s health insurance policy before arriving in the United States.
Please check with the US Embassy in your country for visa requirements. Obtaining a valid passport and visa for entry to the United States is the responsibility of the participant. Please allow adequate time for passport and visa application formalities.
